Don't Sit Down in the Middle of the Woods

Don't sit down in the middle of the woods. If you're lost in the plot or blocked, retrace your steps to where you went wrong. Then take the other road. And/or change the person. Change the tense. Change the opening page. MARGARET ATWOOD Source: Advice to Writers

BookBrowse Highlights: A Soldier Dreams of White Lilies

This week's two featured books will transport you to an Israeli military prison cell and a second-hand music store in England. Then you can go "beyond the book" to explore the history of vinyl records and the life of Palestinian poet Mahmoud Darwish. We also recommend five books to read, watch and discuss; share a Q&A with Judith Newman, author of To Siri With Love; and find the likely source of the expression, "government of the people, by the people, for the people" (and it's probably not what you think). Social publisher LittleThings shuts down, citing Facebook algorithm changes

Image
From humble beginnings as a blog for a pet food venture, in four years LittleThings accrued millions of followers and views on its social platforms through feel-good content. But the publisher announced that it would be no more on Tuesday, putting the blame largely on Facebook's algorithm changes in an email to all staff, published by Business Insider .  SEE ALSO: How to turn off Facebook's new face recognition features Facebook's "prioritisation of friends/family content over publishers was the last straw" for LittleThings, something which the social media platform implemented in early January. Inspiring Quote of the day - They Said So

An earned compliment costs nothing, but its returns are immeasurable. Very humanly, when we are complimented, when our efforts are appreciated, most of us will usually strive to perform even better down the line. What a return on the investment of delivering a few earned words of praise! - G. Kingsley... Source: Quote of the day - They Said So

All the social media opt-outs you need to activate right now

Image
Vero is a three-year-old app that's suddenly become a popular alternative to established social media platforms. It has a platform that promises to show you what your friends and network are posting, in chronological order — and with no ads. It does sound alluring. Tons of users signed up for the Instagram-wannabe before anyone read the fine print and noticed the small detail that your account linked with your name and phone number is difficult to delete . But the Vero micro-scandal serves as a useful reminder: It's always a good time to go through your social media app settings on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and all the rest to check how your data is being used. This is especially necessary when it's your content getting exploited for the benefit a company, usually for targeted advertising. Read more... Twitter's new Bookmarks feature saves you from embarrassing likes

Image
On Twitter , a like is a like — unless it's not.  Over the years the "like" button has come to embody several distinct uses on the social media platform: a way to designate appreciation for a tweet, show agreement, or, confusingly, to essentially bookmark the tweet in question for later reading. Thankfully, with Twitter's unveiling of an official new bookmark feature today, that ambiguity will go the way of the star (although, to be fair, we miss the star ).  SEE ALSO: Twitter totally solves all of its problems with new profile photos That's right, no more "liking" a super weird tweet with a linked article — intending to revisit it later in the day when you have a free moment — only to have that same bizarre thing live forever in your "likes" tab. 20 Top Short Story Collections

Image
Shakespeare once wrote "brevity is the soul of wit." Brevity is also the soul of the short story, which only has a small amount of space to resonate with a reader. As we bid farewell to February, the shortest month of the year, we decided to take a look at the top short story collections on Goodreads. Don't forget to add your favorites to your Want to Read shelf. For this round-up, we're defining short story collections as a series of short stories written by a single author. From there, we chose collections that have been added to Goodreads members' shelves more than 50,000 times and earned at least a four-star rating. This list is by no means exhaustive, however. So please be sure to share your own recommendations in the comments.
